Things Your Mothers Want You to Know
Maximize Your Child's IEP

Ways to Maximize Your IEP Meeting!

  1. Read the text of IDEA, your state's special education rules and regulations and your state's full guide to parent's rights book, prior to any meeting with the school.
  2. Write a parent input statement.  Ask that it be attached to the IEP.
  3. Refer to, and provide copies of, documents and reports to support your requests. The school has 10 days to provide or deny in writing  the services/evaluations you request.
  4. Request a copy of the meeting notes and ask that all team members receive copies within a week. If you disagree with the way something was reported in the notes write a letter to that effect and send it certified, return receipt so there is a record of your objection.
  5. Take someone with you to the meeting. A professional advocate is best, but a friend or relative briefed in your child's needs and familiar with special ed. laws, policies and procedures will do as well. Have this person take notes that are just for you.
  6. Always get everything in writing! For example, if you have a conversation with a therapist to discuss missed services, follow it up with a letter stating what was discussed and how you understand it will be remedied. Or if a teacher says she thinks your child would do better with an individual aide write to her to thank her for her suggestion and that you expect she will back up your request of such at the meeting. Bring copies of these documents to the IEP meeting too.
