This is a draft of an actual letter written to a local elementary school principal. The content is factual.
Dear (Principal):
Please note that I no longer wish to be called everyday to pick up my (child) from school. I realize that (child) exhibits inappropriate behaviors due to (child's) disability. I feel that the school's decision to send my (child) home 5 days a week, before lunch, is a violation of his FAPE (Fair and Appropriate Public Education). It is also a violation of Part B of IDEA 97.
At this time I also relinquish my permission for school officials to contact my parents or in-laws to pick up (child). (Child) exhibits behaviors and actions due to (child's) diagnosis of PDD, which is in the Autism Spectrum.
I will only pick up (child) from school if it is an absolute emergency. I define emergency as a life or death situation. Refusing to go to class is not an emergency.
Sending (child) home everyday is considered a "substantial change in placement" and is worthy of a complaint to Illinois State Board of Education. It is also not professional or acceptable.
If you feel that your school, or personnel, are not equipped in dealing with (child) or (child's) behaviors I suggest you hire or consult with an Autism/Behavioral expert.
Sincerely,
Mom
